Plan Ahead: Order Beneficial Bacteria Before the Spring Rush

· By Matt Rainoff

Beneficial bacteria work best once water temperatures rise in spring, and that is when everyone orders. Ordering in winter means your program is ready on day one.

The latest technology

Our newest approach uses high-tech, proprietary ceramics that hang in the water column. They act as constant bio-reactors — in effect, bacteria generators — that keep beneficial bacteria working in your pond or lake. They complement the liquid bacteria blends in our program, Microbe-Lift PBL and Sludge Away, which restart the nitrogen cycle and digest bottom muck.

Why order early

  • Your supplies are on hand when springtime temperatures arrive, so you can start the moment the water warms.
  • You avoid the seasonal rush that comes once everyone begins treating at the same time.
  • You have time to size the program properly to your water body — its acreage, depth, muck load and aeration.

What to expect in the first weeks

A typical spring start-up begins with weekly applications of PBL for the first four weeks, Sludge Away applied over visible muck zones, and Bio-Lair floating media placed near fountains, aerators or inflows, where there is good water movement. After that, doses move to every two weeks and then monthly. Our nitrogen and organic muck reduction page lays out example schedules for ponds and lakes of different sizes.
